Gamma Knife (Elekta, Sweden)

Gamma Knife® surgery, sometimes referred to as stereotactic radiosurgery, is a non-invasive method for treating brain disorders. It is the delivery of a single, high dose of irradiation to a small and critically located intra-cranial volume through the intact skull.

The extreme precision of Leksell Gamma Knife® makes it possible to administer a high radiation dose to the diseased area, minimizing the risk of damaging healthy tissue.

Gamma Knife® surgery has many advantages. The risk of complications, as compared to open surgery, is less and it is a gentler form of treatment for the patient. Gamma Knife® surgery can normally be performed in a day, and the convalescence time is extremely short.

To date, some 300,000 patients around the world have undergone Gamma Knife® surgery and each year more than 35,000 patients receive this treatment. When available it is the patient’s preferred choice.
